Frequently Asked Questions

1. Horslyx contains Molasses, isn’t all that sugar bad for my horse?
No! Horses are designed to eat sugar (grass can be 20% sugar) and are therefore efficient at digesting it, as long as the intakes of the sugar are little and often (like when the horse is grazing or when they are licking Horslyx).

You should also consider the types of sugar, treats such as polos and sugar lumps are 100% sugar, made from highly refined pure white sugar granules. Molasses is unrefined and is the same sugar as found in grass and hay.

Horslyx is 33% sugar. The recommended intake of 250g per day provides the same amount of sugar as just 2lbs/1Kg of good hay or 2.5Kg of fresh grass.
The type of sugar and the rate of intake is the key to safety. Like most things, sugar is good in moderation. The central nervous system, including the brain, can only use glucose (the purest form of sugar) as an energy source.

Horslyx should be viewed as the equine equivalent of a human multi vitamin tablet, which is also sucrose (sugar) based. The sugar is present as a palatable carrier, as in Horslyx, for the essential vitamins, minerals and trace elements which both the horse and the human needs to promote health and vitality.

2. Will Horslyx rot my horses teeth?
No. The enamel on horses’ teeth is stronger than the enamel that protects human teeth. When a horse licks Horslyx it releases a large amount of saliva which washes over the teeth raising the oral pH. It could be considered the equine equivalent of chewing gum!

3. Do I need to feed salt in addition to Horslyx?
In normal circumstances, no. There is sufficient salt included in Horslyx to satisfy most requirements. However, if you live in a hot climate, or your horse or pony is in hard work it will lose more electrolytes (including salt) in its sweat so it may be necessary to offer additional free choice salt. Horses will self regulate their salt intake (i.e. they will actively seek out salt when deficient and ignore it when the dietary supply is plentiful).

4. Will Horslyx make my horse ‘fizzy’?

No. All horses fed Horslyx glow with health. They will have a glossy, shiny coat and bright eyes but will not be supplied with excessive energy from the product.

5. Why would I need to use Horslyx, my compound feed contains vitamins, minerals and trace elements?

If your horse or pony is at rest or is in light work then Horslyx can replace the compound feed. Horslyx contains a high specification vitamin, mineral and trace element package designed to balance nutrient deficiencies in forage and grazing offering a more natural ‘trickle feed’ nutrient supply.
If your horse has higher nutrient requirements because it is in harder work, then Horslyx offers many other benefits. As well as balancing nutrient deficiencies in a horse’s diet, it can also be used to alleviate stress and boredom for horses stabled for long periods. Licking stimulates saliva production, which is essential for healthy gut function. Another point worth considering is that all living beings have individual metabolic rates, which means that their daily nutrient requirements may not exactly meet the “book values”. The advantage of a free choice feed lick is that it allows the horse to regulate its own requirement. Most horses, when settled on the product, will use Horslyx as and when required. Just be aware of greedy individuals.

6. How can I stop my horse over consuming Horslyx?
If allowed unlimited access, some horses may consume higher than recommended target intakes. We recommend that you introduce Horslyx into your horse’s diet gradually, allowing daily access for 1 to 2 hours. Once your horse has accepted Horslyx as part of its daily routine, free access can be allowed and the majority of horses will enjoy Horslyx as and when they need it.

The Stable Lick Holder for the 5Kg sizes of Horslyx comes with a detachable restrictor grill, helping to prevent a greedy horse from over consuming.
